GYPSUM FOR AGRICULTURAL USE
Sulfur is added to soil in different forms; one of the most commonly used is gypsum, because is represents both an economical and ecologically friendly alternative. Its main component is calcium sulfate dihydrate (CaSO4.2H2O), and it has been widely used to treat sodic soils and to improve soil structure stability. However, it is an low-cost, effective source of sulfur, as its components are rapidily availabe for plants, even though it is not as water-soluble as other sulfates (solubility of pure salt: 2.1 grams per liter of water at 25ªC).
